Our Separators and Interceptors are made to the same high standard as all of our tanks.
Oil/Water Separators are specialty tanks designed to separate free oil, grease and settleable solids from water. After separation, clean water is discharged to a storm drain or sanitary sewer, while the separated oil is retained in the tank for proper disposal.
How Our Oil/Water Separators Work
Interceptors are for more robust applications where it is necessary to remove settleable solids, sand, grit, and other particulates, along with free oil and grease from a water source before discharging into the sewer system. Interceptors can be used as stand-alone units, or in conjunction with an Oil/Water separator to form a more efficient treatment system.

Underground Oil/Water Separators
Since suspended solids settle out more readily than oil in water, the separator design is based on the difference in specific gravity between the oil and wastewater. They operate using coalescer packs of oleophilic plates. As contaminated water flows through the tank, it passes through a number of filter like packs made of plates that attract oil. The accumulation of oil on these plates causes the droplets to combine into larger masses, which naturally allows the oil to more easily rise to the top of the tank. The discharge outlet is situated so the clean water can exit the tank, leaving the oil to be collected for proper disposal.
We have 3 types of Underground Oil/Water Separators, CSI-10, CSI-15, and UL 2215, a premium UL Listed variation that offers continuous flow. Depending on the model, our Underground Oil/Water Separators feature 10 to 15 ppm effluent discharge, controlled by direct or pumped flow, with allowable flow rate determined by the concentrations and types of contaminants present.

Stormwater and Rainwater Management
Any surface that handles vehicular traffic, such as highways, parking lots, driveways, city streets, and country roads, also must handle the fluids and environmental contaminants that we inevitably introduce. When it rains, these oils and fluids rise off the surface and flow into our waterways, which lead directly to lakes or streams, not to treatment plants as some people expect. In the interest of preserving our environment, our separators are designed to meet EPA Guidelines for rainwater and stormwater runoff control.

Aboveground Oil/Water Separators
Since suspended solids settle out more readily than oil in water, the separator design is based on the difference in specific gravity between the oil and wastewater. They operate using coalescer packs of oleophilic, or oil attracting, plates. As contaminated water flows through the tank, it passes through a number of filter like packs made of these plates. The accumulation of oil on the plates causes the droplets to combine into larger masses, which naturally allows the oil to more easily rise to the top of the tank. The discharge outlet is situated so the clean water can exit the tank, leaving the oil to be collected for proper disposal.
All our Aboveground Oil/Water Separators are rated to an effluent discharge quality of 10 ppm. They are in use throughout North America in a variety of aboveground applications, such as:
Since each site's condition and application can be quite different, the most environmentally and cost effective approach is to analyze each situation and design the system accordingly. Our Technical Support Engineers evaluate each application (equipment wash down, rainwater runoff, major oil spill, etc.) as each site may have different technical considerations and should be designed accordingly.
Typical applications for Aboveground Oil/Water Separators are:
Equipment Washdown/Vehicle Maintenance Facilities:
Between cleaning and maintenance, heavy equipment and vehicle rental facilities create a lot of contaminant-heavy runoff. To keep those pollutants out of the environment and meet effluent discharge requirements, many of these facilities use our Aboveground Oil/Water Separators.
Specialty application separators are also available to meet specific needs such as:
• Mop-up units
• Portable units on casters
• Rainwater runoff
The major design parameters which determine your specific needs include:
• Specific gravity or contaminants
• Inlet flow rates
• inlet oil concentration
• Oil storage capacity
• Oil spill capacity
• Temperature
• Effluent quality requirement

Grease Interceptors
Grease Interceptors (also referred to as grease traps for smaller applications) are temporary storage/disposal tanks for wastewater in grease producing areas. Materials in this particular type of wastewater are made up of “fats, oils, and grease” (FOG). FOG materials congeal as they cool; in sewer lines this would cause massive blockages and costly back-ups. A grease interceptor is designed to store the wastewater long enough for FOG materials to naturally separate and float to the top of the water level where the grease can be collected and disposed of properly. A baffle divides the tank into two compartments, the first of which retains the grease and allows the remaining FOG-free wastewater to enter the second compartment, then flow safely into the sewer line.
Grease Interceptors are typically required for high volume restaurants and large commercial operations such as hotels, hospitals, factories, and school kitchens. Any establishment that introduces any FOG material into the sewer system in quantities large enough to cause line blockages should install a grease trap or interceptor. Flowtite® Grease Interceptors come in tank sizes ranging from 600 – 60,000 gallons.

Interceptors for Oil/Sand/Grit
Operating on the same physical principals as the Separators, our Interceptors use a series of baffles and bulkheads to cause heavier contaminants (such as sand, grit, other particulates, and hydrocarbons) to settle out and lighter ones (such as oil and grease) to rise to the top of the tank, only allowing clean water to exit the tank.
Standard Features:
• Single, double and triple basin interceptors
• Constructed of corrosion-resistant fiberglass
• Manufactured for single-wall designs
• CSI FRP interceptors come with a 30 year limited warranty against external and internal corrosion
CSI Interceptors are designed to reduce:
• Sand
• Settleable materials
• Free oil
• Grease
From facilities requiring treatment prior to sewer discharge of:
• Storm water flows
• Hydrocarbon spills
• Drain discharges
Our Interceptors can be used as standalone units or in conjunction with our Oil/Water Separators to form a more efficient system.
