Underground Fiberglass Storage Tanks for Landfill Leachate
Short Form Specifications
The contractor shall provide the appropriate underground fiberglass storage tank and/or any optional accessories as indicated on tank drawings. Capacity, dimensions, and fitting locations and sizes will also be indicated on tank drawings. The tank will be as manufactured by Containment Solutions, Inc. The tank will be installed according to manufacturers current installation instructions.
Long Form Specifications
Part I: General
1.01 Quality Assurance
A. Acceptable Manufacturers:
Containment Solutions, Inc., Conroe, Texas
B. Manufacturing Standards:
Tank manufacturer shall be recognized and listed by UL to manufacture tanks to UL 1316 standard.
C. Materials:
- The tank shall be manufactured of premium resin, glass fibers and silane-treated silica that together result in a composite matrix that is compatible with leachate products.
- Premium resin shall be used in the fabrication of inner surfaces of leachate tanks.
1.02 Submittals:
Contractor shall submit to engineer ___ copies of shop drawings for each tank and ___ copies of manufacturers literature (including installation instructions).
Part II: Products
2.01 Double-Wall Fiberglass Underground Tanks
A. Product-Storage Requirements:
- All primary tanks must be vented. Tanks are designed for operation at atmospheric pressure only.
- Tanks shall be capable of storing landfill leachate of specific gravity up to 1.1 with temperatures not to exceed 150°F at the tank interior surface.
B. Loading Conditions - Tanks shall meet the following design criteria:
- External hydrostatic pressure: Buried in ground with 7' of over burden over the top of the tank, the hole fully flooded and a safety factor of 5:1 against general buckling.
- Surface Loads: When installed according to manufacturers current installation instructions, tanks will withstand surface H-20 axle loads (32,000 lbs./axle).
- Internal Load: Primary and secondary tanks shall withstand 5 psi air pressure test with 5:1 safety factor.
- Tanks shall be designed to support accessory equipment such as heating coils, ladders, drop tubes, etc. when installed according to manufacturers recommendations and limitations.
- Tank laminate shall include silica treated with silane.
C. Interstitial Space: In all double-wall and triple-wall tanks, there shall be a space between the primary and secondary walls to allow for the free flow and containment of any leaked product from the primary tank. The space shall also allow room for the insertion of a monitoring device.
D. Service conditions:
- Each tank and application must have prior approval from CSI, including any limitations on use and design.
- A CSI Chemical Tank Application form must be completed for each tank and submitted to CSI for prior approval.
2.02 Accessories
A. Anchor Straps:
- Straps shall be standard as supplied by tank manufacturer.
- Provide glass fiber reinforced plastic anchor straps for each tank shown.
- Number and location of straps shall be as specified by manufacturer.
B. Flanged Manways:
- All tanks will have one standard 22" ID manway, which is supplied by the manufacturer (30" and 36" manways are optional).
- All manways will be furnished complete with gaskets, bolts and covers.
- Location(s) shall be indicated on tank drawings.
- Optional manway extensions shall be FRP.
C. Fill Tubes: Fill tubes of appropriate design will be supplied by contractor.
D. Tank Bottom Reflector Plates: Plates will be installed under each service fitting and manway opening.
E. Optional Ladders: Ladders shall be the standard ladder supplied by the tank manufacturer (fiberglass, stainless steel, aluminum). Refer to drawings for locations.
F. Optional Internal Pump Platform: Contact manufacturer with pump details.
G. Fittings Threaded - NPT:
- All threaded fittings shall be located in manway lid or tank mounted within 12" of the tank top center line.
- All fittings are to be supplied with plugs.
- All standard threaded fittings to the primary tank and monitoring cavity are half couplings 4" in diameter. The standard secondary containment coupling is 6" in diameter.
- All standard threaded fittings are half couplings. Reducers can be used for smaller sizes where specified and provided by the contractor.
H. Fittings - FRP gusseted nozzles: All FRP nozzles will be supplied with flat-faced flanges and bolt pattern in accordance with ANSI B165, Class 150.
Part III: Execution and Installation
3.01, 3.02 Installation and Testing
Tanks shall be tested and installed according to the current installation instructions provided with the tank.
